PHOENIX – It has recently come to light that monopoly energy providers regulated by the Arizona Corporation Commission have contributed significant funds to political candidates, including thousands of dollars to state legislators who participated in the attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.  On February 5, 2021, I sent a letter to Arizona Public Service Company and on February 9, 2021, I sent a letter to Southwest Gas Corporation asking whether ratepayers paying their energy bills each month were unknowingly financing political campaigns that may not be in their best interest.  It is incumbent on the Commission to ensure ratepayer dollars are being used responsibly and to the benefit of the ratepayer.  I want a full accounting of the purpose of these campaign expenditures and how exactly these expenditures benefit the ratepayers of Arizona.
