Public Safety Improvements at Broadway Road Grade Crossing in Tempe

PHOENIX – The Arizona Corporation Commission, in partnership with the City of Tempe, and Union Pacific Railroad has successfully completed safety improvements to a railroad grade crossing on Broadway Road in Tempe.

Union Pacific Railroad installed two new gate and flasher units on the outside edge of Broadway Road, two new gate and flasher units in newly-constructed medians, and a new constant warning device. The new medians were installed to prevent the motoring public from being able to drive around the existing gates. The City of Tempe installed new sidewalks that are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements which go behind the new gate and flasher units, making the crossing safer for pedestrians. The upgrades will ensure that motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are safe from potential harm when traversing Broadway Road.

The Railroad Safety Section is an integral part of the Arizona Corporation Commission’s Safety Division. The section is responsible for inspection activities on both intrastate and interstate railroads operating in Arizona. Inspection activities are carried out under the authority of the federal government by way of an interagency agreement between the Corporation Commission and the Federal Railroad Administration. It is through this agreement that the section obtains authority to fulfill its mission.
