Commissioners to Hold Public Comment Meeting in Ajo, Arizona

PHOENIX — Arizona Corporation Commissioners will host a public comment meeting in Ajo, Arizona at 3 p.m. tomorrow to hear from customers of the Ajo Improvement Company regarding its application for a rate increase for its electric, water, and wastewater divisions. Ajo Improvement Company serves the city of Ajo, Arizona. Its water and electric divisions each have approximately 980 customers, and its wastewater division has approximately 1,032 customers.

On December 5, 2017, Ajo Improvement Company filed applications with the Arizona Corporation Commission for permanent rate increases for its water, wastewater, and electric divisions that would see rates increase over a five-year rate phase-in period. Here is the breakdown of the increases for each of its three divisions:

  • The application for the wastewater division seeks an increase of 507.4 percent at the end of the phase-in period. The average residential wastewater customer would see a bill increase from $16.10 to $100.30 at the end of the five-year period.
  • The application for the electric division seeks an increase of 132.47 percent at the end of the phase-in period. The average residential electric customer would see a bill increase from $45.41 to $106.11 at the end of the five-year period.
  • The application for the water division seeks an increase of 356.97 percent at the end of the phase-in period. The average residential water customer would see a bill increase from $18.40 to $82.66 at the end of the five-year period.

Commissioner Andy Tobin will be in attendance to hear from ratepayers of the Ajo Improvement Company. Other Commissioners may participate via WebEx to hear the concerns of those impacted by this proposed rate increase. It is important to note that Commissioners will not be able to comment or answer questions, but will be available to hear the concerns of those affected. Although this is the Company’s request, Commission staff will evaluate the application and make the appropriate recommendation to the Commission after due process. Customers that wish to intervene may do so by filing a request to intervene with the Hearing Division.
