ACC and Federal Stimulus Funds

Welcome to the Arizona Corporation Commission’s Federal Stimulus Website. This site is designed to allow Arizonans to track the activities of the State’s regulated electric, natural gas, water and telecommunications companies as they apply for and use funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“ARRA”). The Commission will regularly post on this website information regarding utility ARRA grant applications, updates on grants and loan awards that will help bring new energy, water and telecommunications projects to the state, as well as correspondence regarding ARRA. We welcome your participation in this effort to monitor and encourage the wise and transparent utilization of taxpayer dollars.

Water
The Commission has encouraged Arizona’s private water companies to apply for approximately $55 million in federal stimulus grants and low interest loans available through Arizona’s Water Infrastructure and Finance Authority (“WIFA”). Almost 200 companies and municipalities have applied so far to build projects ranging from pipe and tank replacement to arsenic remediation to powering water treatment plants with solar energy.

Telecommunications
Arizona telecommunications Companies are eligible for $7.2 billion in grants and loans from the Federal Rural Utilities Service (“RUS”) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (“NTIA”). Among other things, phone companies may request funding to assist in building out broadband to areas of Arizona that are currently have little to no access to hi-speed Internet services.

Energy (Electric and Natural Gas)
The Commission has encouraged Arizona electric and natural gas companies to apply for federal stimulus funding and loan guarantees available at the U.S. Department of Energy and other federal agencies, and to work together where possible in a unified effort to propose projects that bolster Arizona’s electric grid, bring potential smart grid technologies to our state, and boost the Arizona’s existing renewable energy and energy efficiency programs.

Commission Stimulus Correspondence
Below is a link to letters the Corporation Commission has sent to members of Congress, Governor Brewer and utility companies regarding maximizing Arizona’s use of federal stimulus funding. ACC Stimulus Letters.

Upcoming Meetings
The Commission will conduct a regular stimulus update at each of its regularly scheduled staff meetings and will likely ask for updates from utility companies regarding their stimulus efforts at each of its upcoming Regular Open Meetings.   Click to listen to Staff meetings here :   You can also attend at 1200 West Washington in Phoenix. We will also post any additional public meetings on this website.
