Commissioner Nick Myers Comments on Copper Basin Delay

Phoenix, Ariz.— EPCOR recently informed developers that the completion of Copper Basin Water Reclamation Facility (Copper Basin) in San Tan Valley will be delayed eight to ten months. Construction of Copper Basin— replacing the older Section 11 lagoon-style plant— began in July 2022 and was scheduled to be completed by December 2023. EPCOR announced that because of global supply chain constraints related to critical electrical equipment, the project is now being delayed.

“Like many others in the community, I’m disappointed to hear that the long-awaited Copper Basin Facility will not be ready on schedule,” commented Commissioner Myers, “However, I can assure the affected community that I will continue to work with EPCOR to address the ongoing hydrogen sulfide problems with Section 11 until Copper Basin is fully operational.”

Even with the delays, EPCOR expects the first half of Copper Basin to be operational by March 31, 2024, allowing flow from two out of the four basins at Section 11 to be diverted to Copper Basin. “Diverting the flows should alleviate some of the problems at Section 11 and will hopefully lift ADEQ’s meter management program to allow new connections,” said Commissioner Myers, “Although the arrival of Copper Basin is taking longer than I had hoped, I’m optimistic relief is just around the corner.”
