PHOENIX — Commissioner Lea Márquez Peterson will host a Special Open Meeting workshop on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, to discuss how artificial intelligence is being used in regulated utility operations and the opportunities and challenges that come with its use.
Commissioner Márquez Peterson opened Docket No. AU-00000A-26-0060 in March to gather information from regulated electric, natural gas and water utilities about how they are exploring and using AI to improve the efficiency and reliability of services provided to customers while protecting the electric grid and water infrastructure from any unintended consequences of using AI. The October workshop will continue that discussion and give Commissioners an opportunity to hear directly from industry experts, utilities and ACC Staff.
“Artificial intelligence can provide greater efficiencies and benefits to our ratepayers and utilities,” said Commissioner Márquez Peterson. “As the regulatory agency responsible for ensuring reliability and affordability, it is important to ensure we are utilizing artificial intelligence in a secure manner to protect and enhance our energy grid and water infrastructure.”
The workshop will feature Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), an independent research and development organization serving the electric power industry. EPRI will discuss its national AI initiatives, including APEX and Safer AI, as well as industry collaboration, key opportunities and challenges, and how utilities can measure success.
Trico Electric Cooperative, Arizona Public Service (APS), Nexus Water Group and Salt River Project (SRP) will discuss their AI strategies, best practices and how AI may benefit customers. ACC Staff will also discuss how other states are approaching the use of AI.
The workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, in Hearing Room One at the Arizona Corporation Commission, 1200 W. Washington Street in Phoenix. Members of the public may watch a livestream/broadcast of the meeting online at: https://www.azcc.gov/live
