Phoenix, Ariz. –Arizona utilities again set new record highs for peak energy demand in 2025 over the past two days. Arizona Public Service Company (APS), Salt River Project (SRP) and Tucson Electric Power (TEP) not only broke their previous peak demand records on Wednesday, August 6, and Thursday, August 7, 2025 between 5 and 6 p.m, all three utilities also experienced higher-than forecasted peak demands. The high temperature in Phoenix on those days were 117 and 118 degrees, respectively. In Tucson, the temperatures reached 111 and 112 degrees, respectively. "Arizona’s rising peak energy demand underscores the critical need for proactive planning," commented Vice Chair Nick Myers. "These record-breaking energy demand peaks above what was forecasted for 2025 are a clear reminder that we must continue to expand dependable power resources while also promoting energy conservation during high-demand periods. The Commission remains committed to maintaining a reliable and resilient grid.”
The Arizona Corporation Commission has made the reliability and stability of our electricity grid one of its top priorities. The Commission has recently approved a variety of new generation and infrastructure projects to ensure our utilities continue to meet the ever-increasing electricity demand.

“I appreciate all that our utilities do to be prepared for our extreme weather conditions,” Commissioner Rachel Walden said. “The men and women at our utility companies continue to deliver critical electricity to make sure our AC units will keep running through this intense heat. At the same time Arizona is top tier in reliability while remaining below the national average in costs.”
“Electricity reliability is a priority for our state and our regulated utilities especially when we are experiencing peak temperatures during the summer months,” said Commissioner Lea Márquez Peterson. “Our work at the Commission to ensure we are prepared for peak demands is vital to the health and safety of families across Arizona.”
During the Arizona Corporation Commission’s 2025 Summer Preparedness Workshop, the state’s three largest utilities assured the Commission that they are prepared to produce a combined total of more than 24,000 MW of electricity to meet customers’ daily summer demands.
